Trócaire has been working with the Kenyan people for almost 30 years and established its East Africa Regional Office in Nairobi in 1994. The programme has evolved over the years from a collection of single and one-off funded projects to long-term multi-annual partnerships with Kenyan Non Governmental Organizations (NGOs).
Currently, the Kenya country program focuses on the areas of:
Emergency response and disaster preparedness;
Human Rights and social justice;
Policy research and education; and
Sustainable livelihoods.
It has 25 core partners funded under these four thematic areas. A long-running regional drought has left 3.5 million of Kenyans in need of food aid. Trócaire, in partnership with Irish Aid, has contributed over ? 800,000 to provide relief to those affected by the current humanitarian crisis.
Working with seven local organizations in the districts of Nyeri, Laikipia, Kitui, Turkana, Meru, Tharaka, Mbeere, and Tana River, Trócaire has been able to provide targeted and effective relief to those affected by the emergency. It is also working towards developing a long term strategy which could help to prevent hunger from becoming endemic in this East African country.
