The Namunyak Wildlife Conservation Trust is one of the most successful community conservation programmes in Kenya . It is run by Samburu communities in the rangeland around the spectacular Mathews Range to the north of Lewa.
With assistance from LWC, they have built up a community game guard system, eliminating elephant poaching from a wide area, and now generate revenue from their wildlife resources through Sarara Tented Camp. Although the project is still dependent on donor funding, this dependence is reducing over time.
LWC has historically helped the Samburu communities around the Mathews Range - about 100 km north of Lewa - to conserve their wildlife and improve their standard of living. With some donor funding, and logistic support from LWC, they have managed to create and manage their own foundation, the Namunyak Wildlife Conservation Trust (NWCT).
